How to apply to become an Examiner with the IIMS Certifying Authority. IIMS welcomes applications from suitably qualified, experienced surveyors who wish to become an approved coding surveyor.

The criteria for becoming an IIMS Certifying Authority Examiner is as follows:
• Applicants must be an IIMS member of the appropriate level.
• Applicants must be able to demonstrate through evidence at least three years surveying experience in all types of vessels (copies of survey reports may be requested).

The application process is as follows and once completed should be sent to the Certifying Authority Administrator:

  • Completed IIMS CA Surveyor Application Form.
  • Include a non-refundable application fee of £60 (plus tax).
  • Full CV showing Surveying Experience.
  • Full Condition Survey or Equivalent Reports (for all the different Hull Construction Materials for which the Applicant wishes to undertake Coding Surveys)
  • Evidence of Experience in Carrying out Inclining Experiments of undertaking simplified Heel Tests, STOPS calculations or other simplified Stability Assessments (if applying to be approved for this work).
  • An SCV1 and SCV2 (as appropriate) completed after survey of an actual vessel. SCV documentation completed for another CA will also be acceptable additionally as supporting evidence.
  • Example of an MLC Inspection Report (if applying to be approved for this work).

The application form and relevant documentation will be reviewed by the Certifying Authority Committee and a date will be set for an interview, which is mandatory.

The criteria for approval is to show knowledge of MGN 280 and also the Workboat Code Edition 2/3, if looking to be approved for the type of vessels that code is applicable to.

The outcome and registration process is as follows:
Applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application after the interview has taken place. The Certifying Authority Registration fee will be set by the committee at the beginning of each year and will be valid for a period of 12 months starting in August of that year. The current fee is £130 per annum, or pro rata depending upon the date of approval.

IIMS CA members will be expected to also annually provide information pertaining to continuing professional development, which can be completed through numerous means.
